NAUTICAL TRIVIA

GAM
/gam/ noun

A GAM is a social meeting or informal conversation between two whaling ships at sea. Referenced in Herman Melville’s novel, Moby Dick. The name of the new Hull Yacht Club Newsletter.

A MESSAGE FROM THE COMMODORE...

Welcome to 2023! In this first edition of the HYC GAM, you’ll find 2022 season race results for both Senior Race and Junior Sail. It is a culmination of the top Hull sailors in each category, including exclusive club awards. As the next season advances, you’ll see weekly results so we can say congrats and fist-bump the champs all summer long.

Thank you for your responses to the fall HYC Survey. We heard from 180 members and are behind the scenes discussing and prepping for the 2023 season. A few highlights are below...

  • 80-90% of all respondents rated the porch as the #1 amenity at the club. The launch and bar follow closely behind, respectively.
  • Members want to bring back the Lobster Bake and more live music offerings.
  • A good day at the club looks like...
    • A day on the water and cocktails on the porch.
    • Service with a smile and a friendly atmosphere.
    • Any day at the HYC is a good day.

Please know that the 2023 invoices to renew your membership will be arriving via email from info@regattaman.com this week. Be sure to check your spam folder if you do not see one. This year, the club will not be absorbing credit card fees, a sum of $8,000 annually, but will be including the applicable fees on each member's credit card transaction. Of course, you can continue to pay by check and avoid the fees altogether. We look forward to seeing you on the water and on the porch next season.

Lastly, Junior Sailing Registration is coming up on February 1. If you want your junior sailor to return or are thinking about entering your child or grandchild for the first time, read on.

Fair winds,
Malee Nuesse

JUNIOR SAILING REGISTRATION INFORMATION

Registration for Jr. Sailing Programs will open on February 1. We will send a notification email to all members at that time. The classes fill up quickly, so don't wait to register!

We are adding a 420 Beginner program to the usual lineup of Opti Beginners, Opti Advanced, and 420 Advanced full summer programs. Learn-to-Sail programs will run 6 one-week classes as we did last year.

For more class details, visit the Jr. Sail tab at hullyc.org or email junior.sailing@hullyc.org.

MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL INFORMATION

  • Club dues for the 2023 season will be emailed to you this week. Early pay discounts are available to both full ($100) and social ($50) members who pay before February 15. Check out the Dues and Membership Policy for more information on renewing or changing your membership status.
  • Not paying early? Be sure to pay for your membership renewal by April 1 so you do not forfeit your membership (Article XI Bylaws).
  • If you are NOT renewing your membership, please let the Membership Committee know ASAP or by April 1 at the latest. We have a strong waiting list of anxious applicants who need to arrange for moorings.
  • All dinghies must be paid in full before the season starts and can be done so at the time of your membership renewal. See the Dinghy Policy for more info, including the types and sizes of allowable dinghies, and the new outdoor motor policy.
  • Learn how to update your member profile with your family's contact info, a new boat, work hours, and more.

EVENTS CALENDAR

  • WINTER CRUISE - FEBRUARY 11th @ 6:30pm: Get together with fellow club members at Jo's Nautical Bar in Hull. Discuss the upcoming boating season and share ideas you may have in mind for yourself and/or the club. All members are welcome to get together for this winter cruise.
